MEMORIES OF AL

My grandpop Al was a gentle and kind person. He was a ballroom dancer, a house flipper, a business owner, a world traveler, an owner of flashy cars, a father and a grandfather. I learned to swim in his pool in Florida and drove a motorboat for the first (and only) time with him. I remember him stocking his fridge with kosher food in anticipation of our visits and how happy he was to have all of his family under one roof when we celebrated his 80th birthday.
He suffered from Parkinson's and Dementia, but his passion and warmth shone through it for as long as possible. Long after he started using a walker and a wheelchair he still wanted to dance. He never complained, even as his health deteriorated, and his (wonderful wonderful) caregiver told us that once, as she was pushing his wheelchair he asked if she wanted to switch places with him.
One of my earliest memories of him is the postcards we'd get from everywhere he traveled while teaching ballroom dancing on a cruise. We had a world map with a little boat pin we'd use to follow his world-wide adventure from our living room.
Now we're following him on his last world tour as he flies from Florida to New York to Israel, where he'll be laid to rest near my hometown.

Your dad had an amazing life. I know NO ONE who has lived their life the way your dad did. He truly did what he wanted, when he wanted and with whom he wanted. He had many riches -- dancing, his children and his grandchildren. If I can live my life with the freedom and enjoyment he did, my life will be one well lived.
May his spirit always be a blessing to you.

I am deeply sorry for your loss and hope it comforts you to know that all of us who knew your dad share in your grief. Al was a wonderful man who had all the gifts of the Spirit: peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness and self-control. He is now far away from earthly cares. We will miss him greatly. May he Rest In Peace and May you find peace in your own hearts as you release him to his Maker. Take care of yourselves and of each other.
With love,

Al was always one of our favorite friends.  He lived life to the fullest.   We remember he took up ballroom dancing.  He was so good at it he danced his way around the world on cruise ships!!  He recommended his dance teacher to us and we took lessons before Mark & Pam’s wedding 21 years ago.  We always had a good time when in his company whether it was Brookline Ave, Philly or Florida.   Al was always an inspiration to both of us.
